We are looking for someone who can help us build on our recent achievements, as we emerge from Covid restrictions and create our new 5-year strategy, and who can be an advocate for the company and help it secure additional sources of income so we can maintain and expand our activities and reach.

In addition to the responsibilities of a trustee, the Chair will play an important role in leading the Board in its strategic role, ensuring that the organisation pursues its objectives, complying with charity and company law, supporting the leadership (CEO) and acting as an ambassador for the organisation.

The Chair will also act as the final decision maker on any urgent matters.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategic leadership
  • Ensure that the Board operates within its charitable objectives.
  • Ensure that the Board supports the strategic direction of the organisation through the development and review of its Strategic Plan.
  • Ensure that the Board is able to regularly review major risks and manage and mitigate those risks.
  • Ensure that the Board & Finance Committee fulfils its duty to ensure the sound financial health of Hoxton Hall with systems in place to ensure financial accountability.

Governance

  • Ensure that the governance arrangements of the charity are consistent with charity law and in line with best practice for the sector.
  • Encourage the development of trustees’ knowledge and capability and appraise the performance of the trustees and the Board annually.
  • Ensure that the Board is regularly refreshed and incorporates the right balance of skills, knowledge and expertise, and reflects the wider population of East London
  • Develop and work within appropriate organisational policies.

Efficiency and Effectiveness

  • Chair meetings of the Trustee Board effectively and efficiently, bringing impartiality and objectivity to the decision-making process.
  • Ensure that trustees are fully engaged, that the Board takes collective ownership of decisions and that the decisions made are in the best long-term interests of Hoxton Hall.
  • Work closely with the leadership team to ensure that meetings are well planned, meaningful and reflect the responsibilities of trustees.

External relations

  • Act as a spokesperson or ambassador for the organisation.
  • Facilitate introductions with contacts and networks who may be interested in supporting Hoxton Hall

Relationship with CEO

  • Build a strong, effective and constructive working relationship with the CEO, ensuring that s/he is held to account for achieving agreed strategic objectives.
  • Conduct regular reviews against performance objectives with the CEO and an annual appraisal in consultation with other trustees, including setting performance objectives and addressing opportunities for professional development.
