Helen’s background was originally in theatre PR, before becoming a marketing consultant in 1999. She was the Press & Comms Lead for Walk the Plank’s major 2022 outdoor arts commission Green Space Dark Skies working with strategic partners across the UK. She was part of the founding management teams of Manchester International Festival (2004-7), Cultureshock (Commonwealth Games North West Cultural Programme, Manchester 2002), British Ceramics Biennial (2008-17), Asia Triennial Manchester (2007-14) and The Lowry. From 2007-9 Helen led Marketing Manchester’s Marketing Coordination Unit as the Director of Strategic Marketing.
Though Helen works across all artforms, she has developed a particular specialism in festivals and has recently started writing a monthly newsletter – PalmerSquared on festivals. She also regularly delivers training in strategic marketing, communications and audience development and is a mentor for Arts Emergency.
With partner consultants Helen also works on business transformation and visioning work for arts organisations including for Dance Base in Scotland, Dance Consortia North West for Cheshire Dance, The Point and The Berry Theatres for Eastleigh Borough Council, theatre provision in the School of Theatre for Manchester Metropolitan University, and The Hallé Orchestra.
Helen has worked extensively with museums and heritage attractions across the UK helping them to build stronger relationships with audiences including National Museums Northern Ireland, Manchester Museums and Galleries Consortium, Heritage & Culture Warwickshire, Barnsley Museums Service, Manchester Jewish Museum, Piece Hall Halifax, National Coal Mining Museum for England, Chelsea Physic Garden, Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, Showtown, and Manchester Town Hall.
Helen was a Director of CTConsults for 10 years, an agency providing strategic guidance in culture, tourism, heritage, and place branding to places and destinations across the UK.
Helen holds a B.A.(Hons) Tourism Studies, MA (with Distinction) Humanities (Film Studies), a PhD in Film Studies and the Chartered Institute of Marketing’s Diploma in Marketing.
