Passionate about the arts, and about strengthening the beating heart of the creative life of Barnsley, the Board and Executive of Barnsley Civic seek an ambitious and driven Head of Programme to drive forward their strategic plan and put Barnsley firmly on the local and national map for its gallery, events, concerts and productions.
About the role
The Head of Programme is an exciting new post created as the result of an organisational restructure. With the organisation’s 5-year strategy in mind, the new Head of Programme will work closely with the CEO and with colleagues on the senior leadership team to deliver an exciting and innovative new programme which reflects a balance of commercial and local. Sensitive to the desires of its audiences from the local area, the new Head of Programme will recognise the importance of popular programming which attracts existing and new audiences.
As well as programming for the main performance space, the Head of Programme will lead the performance and artist support programmes for the local creative talent of the future, prioritising artists resident in the borough and Yorkshire. The Head of Programme will, in addition, have oversight of the art gallery programmes and the creative learning and engagement strategy. Although not needing to be experienced in visual art or outreach, they will line-manage the teams that run these aspects, overseeing the creative engagement officer, technical manager, and gallery curator.
Opportunistic and entrepreneurial, the Head of Programme will create an innovative and coherent public offer in the variety of indoor and outdoor, formal, and informal spaces across the venue, ensuring that there is truly something for everyone at Barnsley Civic. The Head of Programme, with the team, will develop an innovative and exciting programme of work which will attract audiences from a variety of backgrounds from across the Borough. They will also collaborate with colleagues to produce a short/medium-term plan for supporting and mentoring local artists across a multitude of art forms and creative practices that encourages them to use Barnsley Civic resources. They will also monitor these exciting plans to ensure they are implemented across a variety of programme areas.
Finally, the new role gives the postholder the opportunity to blaze a trail for programming, shape the future of the organisation, transform the venue and all it offers, and ultimately make a huge impact on the residents and visitors to the newly developed Barnsley. The new Head of Programme will work with the CEO & Trustees to develop a clear strategy for Barnsley Civic to ensure that it becomes a dynamic creative hub locally and across South Yorkshire.
