Line Management Responsibility: Occasional supervision of freelance workers

Summerhall is a vibrant arts and entertainment hub in the centre of Edinburgh, located in the old Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies by the Meadows. Summerhall is a venue for diverse programmes of visual and performing arts, and a place for all kinds of events, parties, workshops, festivals, weddings and meetings.

Summerhall also presents an award-winning Fringe programme each August, winning multiple Fringe First and Total Theatre awards, and bringing leading theatre-makers to the Fringe.

An opportunity has become available to join Summerhall’s technical team, supporting a huge range of events and performances.

What is the Job…

As well as the setup, operation and maintenance of a variety of technical equipment, the role will involve supporting the Production manager with the administration, planning and scheduling of Summerhall’s programme of events, performances, exhibitions, and live music throughout the year.

You will work under the Production Manager, alongside one other permanent employee and a number of freelance technicians.

Who are we looking for…

Summerhall is looking for a hard-working self-motivated individual with experience in professional sound, lighting and AV who can work effectively independently and as part of a team.

This role would suit someone early in their career looking to learn new skills and face new challenges. The diverse nature of events in Summerhall is unmatched, with a huge breadth of experience to be gained.

Tasks and Responsibilities…

  • Setup and operation of sound, lighting and AV systems for live music, events and theatre
  • PAT testing and maintenance of electrical equipment
  • Basic repair work on AV equipment
  • Assisting with the administrative workload of the department, including scheduling, equipment allocation and crew booking.
  • Assisting clients and other departments with identifying and implementing solutions to their technical production needs
  • Able to work well under pressure and during very busy peaks of service
  • Ingest, playlist building and operation of digital cinema presentations
  • Assisting with planning for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and other large events

Essential Skills:

  • Enthusiasm for Summerhall’s programme
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience setting up and operating professional sound, lighting and AV equipment
  • An all-round grasp of event and performing arts technology
  • The ability to problem solve and fault find efficiently
  • Good working knowledge of health and safety in an events/performing arts context
  • Basic electrical knowledge
  • Computer literacy , IT and Admin  skills

Desirable Skills

  • Experience mixing live music
  • Experience with gallery installations
  • Experience of Theatrical Stage Management
  • Experience in Lighting design
  • Expertise with Midas, Allen & Heath and Yahama sound consoles
  • Expertise in Qlab programming
  • Expertise with Avolites, ETC Eos series and Zero 88 FLX lighting consoles
  • Familiarity with D&B audiotechnik and Nexo PA systems
  • PASMA ticket
  • PAT test certification
  • Full clean driver’s license
