Freelance Creative Practitioner for Hackney Museum’s schools
programme inspired by the history of carnival in Hackney
Each year Hackney Museum works with a Creative Practitioner/Practitioners of African
or Caribbean heritage to co-design and deliver an authentic and creative experience for
visiting school children as part of Hackney Council’s annual Black History Season.
Hackney Museum is committed to representing the experiences of Hackney’s
communities throughout the year with a diverse history programme. This role is an
opportunity for young learners to be engaged, challenged, excited and inspired as they
participate in a creative and authentic experience.
We are not looking for a traditional exhibition tour or a making session, but an inclusive, interactive, engaging and creative experience for children.
We accept applications from individuals or groups, who can devise and deliver a
consistent programme within the contract value.
In September 2024, Hackney Museum will open a new temporary exhibition about the
origins of Hackney’s Caribbean carnival arts and parades, in celebration of the first
Hackney Carnival since 2019.
The successful practitioner will be expected to use their skills and creative practice to
develop a 90 minute in-person session and deliver this to school children aged 8-11
years old. The session should make use of your creative practice and be inspired by the
themes, stories and objects in the temporary exhibition.
These sessions will be delivered by you, in-person at Hackney Museum.
The development of these sessions is expected from May with support from the Museum learning team. Delivery will take place through September, October and November 2024, as part of Hackney Council’s Black History Season (see brief for dates).
While the exhibition is currently in development, it will look specifically at the influence
of Caribbean traditions on the development of carnival groups and processions in
Hackney from the 1970s up to today.
You can get more information from the project brief, including details of how to apply,
and dates required.
The contract value for this work is valued at £7,410. This equates to £260 per day for
a freelancer.
Application deadline: Monday 22nd April 2024, midnight
Applicants invited to interview will be informed by Wednesday 1st May 2024
Interview date: Wednesday 8th May 2024 in person at Hackney Museum (do say if
